The United World College of the Adriatic was founded in 1982 by the
Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, with the support of the Italian Government.
It was the fith United World College and the first to be founded outside the English speaking
world.
It has been registered as an ONLUS (Organizzazione Non Lucrativa di Utilità Sociale) in 1993.
It is member of the
"Science System".
The College is unusual and unique within UWC in not having a separate campus.
The philosophy of the College is shared with all of the United World Colleges: to promote
international understanding and cooperation through education.
How should one promote such important ideals without seeking to put them into practice in
daily life?
The Adriatic College has 200 students from some 80 countries.
They spend the last two years of their secondary education to prepare for the International
Baccalaureate Diploma, immediately before university entry. They study together, practise sport and
cultural activities, undertake community service, and seek to integrate with the Italo-Slovene
village of Duino.
Irrespective of race, creed, colour, gender, family background or ability to pay, candidates
are selected on the basis of their personal merit and potential.
All students attending the United World College of the Adriatic are scholarship holders and
the scholarship covers all costs for full board and tuition for the two years.
The College enjoys the strong continuing support of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia
Giulia as well as of other Italian Regions, the Italian Parliament and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
