Success in Winter Sports!!!
|
The biggest advantage of living in an international environment is to be able to experience
different cultures but it also provides the opportunity to practice outdoor sports that one
probably wouldn’t have had a chance to approach at home. The most popular winter sport activity at
the College, as you might have guessed, is Skiing - both downhill and cross-country.
The cross-country activity had 29 students and 7 teachers this year. The participants were
split into groups and went skiing over 5 weekends. Beginners learned to ski at the Scuola di Sci di
Fondo Valcanale in Tarvisio.
On the weekend of the 17th of February, 23 participants from the Adriatic College
representing 20 countries surprised us by successfully completing a cross-country ski marathon that
had 2500 participants from 25 countries (our group represented 20 of these 25 countries). The
competition was in Val Casies. Two first year students, one from Norway and one from Spain, crossed
the finish line of the full marathon (42 km) in 3hrs. 23min. 22secs. and 3hrs. 45min. 37secs.,
respectively. For both, it was their first ‘great race’ and for our first year from Spain it was
her first cross-country ski season.
The other 21 members of the group participated in the 28 km sprint, full of enthusiasm and
spirit; our Swedish second year even insisted on completing the event with a damaged knee.
Considering the fact that most members had never skied before this winter, the results were
excellent. It was not a matter of competition – it was a matter of helping and supporting each
other to reach the destination.
