On Thursday, 22nd of March, eight students, accompanied by our social service coordinator
Simone Sgarbossa, the European Projects coordinator Valentina Bach and our newest addition to the
European Project team – Matej Rolich - attended a conference in Monfalcone on DEVELOPMENT
COOPERATION WITH THE BALKAN EX-WAR ZONES.
The guest speaker was the famous writer Predrag Matvejevic, who has agreed to give the
keynote speech at the international conference on the Adriatic which the College is hosting, in
March 2008, as part of its 25th Anniversary festivities. The conference was chaired by Silvia
Altran committee chairman of the Monfalcone City Council. Guests and attendees included Tommaso
Vaccarezza from the Mostar Agency of Local Democracy, Lucio Gregoretti of the international
cooperation office of the Monfalcone City Council and Valentina Bach who presented our projects on
active citizenship and education in partnership with the UWC in Mostar.
Darija (Bosnia-Herzegovina), Tijana (Serbia), Ana (Serbia) and Ivana (Bosnia-Herzegovina)
spoke about the fears and hopes of the youth from the Balkans. Predrag Matvejevic, born in Mostar,
attended precisely the Mostar Gymnasium and was touched by their witness and struck by the progress
the UWC's have made in developing cooperation among Croatian and Bosniak young people in Mostar.
We intend to continue working on projects to build and strengthen our relationship with peace
builders and well-wishers all over.
