How to apply

All students attend the College on a full scholarship. This scholarship programme makes it possible to select students without regard to social or financial background, race, politics or religion. Scholarships are provided by the Italian Government, by Italian Regions and the Italian UWC National Committee, and by a number of UWC Committees in other countries.

A suitable applicant is a lively pupil who is doing well academically and who has a good range of interests. Important attributes include the ability to mix with others and to be tolerant of fundamentally different opinions and attitudes. Experience has shown that successful students are those who come with a clear awareness of our aims and a strong personal commitment to contribute to them. The College seeks students who are socially mature and morally responsible.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

Italian students who apply for the selections will be called for the preliminary selections on a regional basis in the city nearest their home.
Selections are organized in central locations throughout Italy wherever there is a sufficient number of applicants. In 2007, the preliminary selections were held in Rome, Milan,Turin, Florence, Padua, Cagliari, Catania, Conversano and Duino. Although the number of applicants varies from year to year, approximately 500 students usually apply. Of these applicants, 70 students are chosen to participate in the final Italian selections, held in Duino the first week of June. Each candidate comes to Duino for two days during which time he/she lives in a student residence and eats in the college dining hall.

The selections consist of a test of linguistic aptitude and Mathematical Logic as well as participation in discussion workshops and in "role games" organized by ex-students of the UWC. The most important part is the individual interview with the Commission. All parts of the selection are aimed at evaluating the level of general culture, personality, motivation, interests, skills, affinity with the ideals of UWC and other characteristics of candidates.

In each part of the selection, percentage points are awarded to candidates according to their performance. The scholarships are then distributed on the basis of the overall score accumulated by each candidate.

Although lessons at all United World Colleges are held in English, fluency in this language is not a requirement for selection. Previous knowledge of English is obviously an advantage. It is expected that scholarship winners not fluent in English will study over the summer before beginning their first year. Once living in the college environment, the motivated student quickly makes progress in this language.

PHYSICS

The United World College of the Adriatic offers five scholarships per year for students gifted in the study of Physics. These scholarships are for candidates from East/Central Europe, and from the Developing Nations of the world. Eligible applicants, with a strong background and interest in Physics, will indicate the clear ambition to pursue their interest in the theoretical and experimental sciences at university.
It is expected that, upon completion of the IB Diploma, scholarship funding will be made available for further education at Italian universities through the Government of Italy’s “Accordi culturali “ programme.

The selection is carried out by a committee established by the Adriatic College, on the basis of a special application form and report by the applicant’s Physics teacher. The selection process may include the results of a test which the National Committee would be asked to supervise.

These scholarships are on offer to all National and Selection Committees in East/Central Europe and from the developing nations, not just to those which have sent students to the College in the past.

The scholarships cover all costs at the College. Travel and pocket money will only be provided, following specific request by the National / Selection Committee, in those few cases where neither the Committee nor the student’s family is able to meet these limited expenses.

The motivation underlying these scholarships is the following :

  • To counter the deepening and critical international student disaffection with the study of Physics by providing a programme of study in this study for gifted young scientists.
  • To consolidate educational opportunities for students from the developing world and East/Central Europe.
  • To challenge gifted young scientists beyond the IB programme.
  • To strengthen the UWC of the Adriatic’s position as a centre of excellence in the Sciences.
  • To make optimum use of the facilities of the Rita Levi Montalcini Science laboratories.
  • To strengthen links between the Adriatic College and the prominent international scientific and research institutions collectively known as the Trieste System.

The Physics scholars in 2007-08 represent the countries of : Albania, Argentina, Bulgaria, Guatemala, Malaysia, Montenegro, Mongolia, Pakistan and Vietnam.
