COMMUNITY SERVICE
All
United World Colleges share the belief that the heart of their
philosophy lies in the experience of offering assistance to members of
the neighbouring community.
This
is even more so at the Adriatic College: not far away from the city of
Trieste, the United World College of the Adriatic is nonetheless
located within a small village, hence fully integrated into the life of
the local community. Therefore, its Community Service programme bears
an enormous significance in the life of the College.
It is
precisely through their Community Service that College Students apply
their ideals to everyday life; it is a chance for them to show their
commitment to “making the world a better place”, to offer their help to
others regardless of differences. For its students to make the most of
this challenging experience, the College provides them with a wide
variety of opportunities, ranging from social services, to arts, music,
and environmental services. None of these are easy, but the rewards may
be profound!
Our Community Service Department is made up of Social and Multicultural Service sections.
Social and Multicultural Services
These include: - Work with children – art, English and other activities in local kindergartens and primary schools;
- Multicultural
presentations to students of local
primary schools through a range of activities aimed at fighting
prejudice and racism;
- Various activities with young people who
have a disadvantaged social background - by providing them with a
number of opportunities for their free time;
- Assistance to persons with mental or physical disabilities;
- Activities with the mentally disabled;
- Offering
companionship to elderly people, blind people or other persons in their
homes who are willing to share their experiences and their memories;
- Visiting elderly people in local institutions;
- Helping
people in the local hospital as well as working as volunteers in the
local Red Cross Ambulance service, after having taken a first aid
course;
- Environmental Services – including helping local farmers and path maintenance;
- Band service – musical concerts in hospitals, institutions for elderly and sick people;
- Fair trade – volunteer work in a fair trade shop and promoting the ideals of fair trade in schools
- Conflict transformation – activities which aim to integrate different ethnic and national communities of the area.
The
United World College of the Adriatic has its own Voluntary Work
Association, Mondo 2000, which aims to include young people from the area in the
voluntary work done by the College. Students are also asked to
undertake a College Service: each week they devote between one and two
hours to the care and maintenance of College property and equipment or
to the administration of programmes such as cultural, theatre and
concert visits. More info on Social Service |
